Molecular genetic analysis of high-level gentamicin resistance in Enterococcus hirae.

High-level resistance to gentamicin was studied in seven clinical isolates of Enterococcus hirae. In common with other members of the genus Enterococcus, such resistance in E. hirae was associated with single, large, conjugative plasmids. Molecular genetic analysis revealed five distinct plasmid types amongst the seven isolates. The determinant mediating high-level gentamicin resistance in E. h...

Structures, locations, and transfer frequencies of genetic elements conferring high-level gentamicin resistance in Enterococcus faecalis isolates in Greece.

The elements conferring high-level gentamicin resistance in 64 clinical isolates of Enterococcus faecalis were characterized by PCR and by restriction enzyme hybridization analysis of genomic and plasmid DNA. There was a strong association between gentamicin resistance and the aac(6')-aph(2") gene carried on IS256-based elements with different structures, locations, and transfer characteristics.

High-level resistance to gentamicin in clinical isolates of Streptococcus (Enterococcus) faecium.

During a 14-month period beginning in July 1986, three distinct clinical isolates of Streptococcus (Enterococcus) faecium demonstrating high-level resistance (MIC, greater than 2,000 micrograms/ml) to gentamicin, kanamycin, tobramycin, and streptomycin were recovered from individual patients at one institution. Combinations of ampicillin with any of these agents failed to show bactericidal syne...

Genetic characterization of high-level gentamicin-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecalis in Iran.

The prevalence of resistance to high levels of gentamicin among 182 isolates of Enterococcus faecalis from 2 Iranian hospitals was 42%. Gentamicin resistance was associated with conjugative plasmids (>70 kb) in most strains. Fingerprinting using EcoRI and HindIII showed genetic variation among these plasmids and gave evidence of nosocomial outbreaks and persistence of infection in different war...

Genetic relatedness among Enterococcus faecalis with transposon-mediated high-level gentamicin resistance in Swedish intensive care units.

We studied 45 isolates of Enterococcus faecalis with high-level gentamicin resistance (HLGR), all but one concomitantly resistant to ciprofloxacin, and 25 ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates without HLGR for genetic relatedness using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). E. faecalis were isolated from patients admitted to intensive care units at eight hospitals in southern Sweden from December ...
